Improved Cookstove Distribution

Rural areas of Gujarat & Madhya Pradesh · CSR initiative of EKI Energy Services Limited

THE CHALLENGE

Continued reliance on firewood and traditional mud/three-stone stoves, associated with low thermal efficiency and indoor smoke pollution.

Indoor smoke
Women cooking at open fires, often with children nearby, are exposed to smoke inside the home every day.
Low efficiency
Much of the heat from traditional stoves is lost, so more fuelwood is burnt for every meal.
Time and forests
Collecting firewood takes time and effort, and adds pressure on nearby forests.
THE SOLUTION

The Foundation facilitated distribution and installation of Improved Cookstoves for rural households. The ICS is intended to burn fuelwood more efficiently, improve heat transfer to cooking vessels, save fuelwood and reduce associated greenhouse-gas emissions.

Community & environmental benefits

Health
Reduced smoke exposure in the household environment.
Fuel
More efficient use of fuelwood and potential reduction in fuelwood consumption.
Time & effort
Reduced time and effort associated with collecting firewood.
Environment
Lower fuel use and associated greenhouse-gas emissions; reduced pressure linked to forest cutting.
